Originally this toy bulldog was the mascot lap dog companion for Nottingham, England lacemakers in the mid-1800s. With the threat of the Industrial Revolution eliminating the cottage industry of lacemaking, they moved to the French countryside to maintain their craft. The dogs mixed with other breeds to develop into the French Bulldog we all know and love today, never losing their ultimate best friend quality. The lace details in this painting reference traditional Nottingham lace designs.
